About the Farm
When it comes to coffee cooperatives, Costa Rica stands out for establishing and managing successful and highly developed organizations. The Dota Coffee Growers Cooperative is one of the most distinguished integrated cooperatives, founded in 1960 and now representing nearly 900 members.
The cooperative is strongly committed to environmental sustainability. It has achieved carbon-neutral certification, making it one of the first coffee-processing facilities of its kind. Some of its equipment is powered by hydroelectric energy, while drying machines use natural fuel made from coffee husks left over from previous processing batches. The cooperative also uses advanced equipment designed to reduce water and energy consumption.
Throughout the year, cooperative members dedicate their efforts to careful farm management. During harvest season, coffee cherries are delivered to the processing center, where strict quality standards are applied in sorting, cleaning, drying, and preparation.
This coffee is processed with careful attention to sustainability, using both sun drying and mechanical drying methods, ensuring reduced water consumption and precise processing protocols.
One of the cooperative’s key goals is supporting the economic sustainability of its members by providing diverse employment opportunities. The farm operates its own roastery, runs three cafés, and has a barista training center, helping farmers develop their passion for producing high-quality coffee.
